Don’t know how I missed this:
Aspen Skiing Company announced today that it will extend the season at Aspen Highlands through April 27. With over 120 inches on the ground in Highland Bowl and almost 100 inches at mid-mountain, the mountain should be in excellent shape through the end of the month of April. Highlands will open on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20 and April 26-27.
All Aspen/Snowmass season passes are valid as they are during the regular season. Adult tickets will be $39 per day, youth and seniors will pay $35 and children’s tickets will be $25. As always children six and under ski for free.

My first time in Telluride in winter turned out to be fabulous. It was warm, sunny, not too busy, and there was plenty of soft snow.
Some highlights:
Our best runs were in Black Iron bowl. We opted for a few hikes and hit Westlake, Lakeview, and Dihedral Chute.

The other day at REI, these Salomon Vertigo X-Mountain shoes caught my eye—I’d seen them earlier in the season for about $95, they looked “wintery,” and the quick lace system was interesting when I saw it in action on other people’s feet. They are good-looking in a urban-alpine-functionalist kind of way, and they say “Soft Shell” on them so they totally played on my warm spider-roll and cadbury-creme-egg associations.
I was intrigued and on sale for $53, I had to bite.

Lou Dawson details his top three Myths of Avalanche Survival. Definitely worth a read if you think skiing in the back country is all fun and games—Lou knows how to be grim.
Recap:
- My beacon is my savior—and needs more features.
- If I’m buried in an avalanche, I’ll just snuggle in my nice little snow hole till my friends dig me out.
- You get dug out of the snow and ski to the bar for a hot buttered rum.

Despite my misgivings about a resort with a well-earned reputation for catering to hordes of inept skiers with “wacky” hats, I found myself at Breckenridge last weekend.
To get away from the obstacles, we made our way almost immediately up to the Imperial Express chair—an exercise which only took an hour or so. But, once in the rarefied air up there near the top of Peak 8, we found the relative peace attendant upon only those places possessing the power to cause hypoxia among the flat landers.

Forbes Traveler online lists the 20 snowiest ski resorts in the world. I think we all knew that Colorado wasn’t exactly number one, but it’s depressing to see our lone entry down there at number 18.
Cold comfort for Colorado snow enthusiasts though, is knowledge that more is not necessarily better—especially if you’ve ever been stuck, wrong way up on a chute, in 473 inches of Kirkwood’s Sierra Cement.

It took all the way until the middle of December, but Christine and I finally got our ski season kicked off today at Winter Park. Our original plan was to stay closer to home and go to Eldora, but we made an early morning decision to check out some of the 6 inches that Winter Park was reporting.
It was a rough ride down from Fort Collins, with fog and slick roads all the way down I-25. In the end, it took us 3 hours to get to the resort and we were second guessing our decision to go to Winter Park. Once we got onto the snow, however, we were glad we came.
I’m used to ski resorts over reporting their snow totals, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a full 6 inches (and then some) on the the slopes. Unbelievable conditions today. From the first run to the last, we were skiing through knee deep powder. Beautiful.
The skiing conditions are great right now. I may just have to get out this weekend too and track up some more snow.
Sure beats work!
